In recent decades, participatory processes have become a defining feature of many artistic practices, with a strong impact on citizens’ relationship with culture. On the one hand, it is a question of finding more effective ways to extend cultural participation to categories of citizens who have been effectively excluded from it for various reasons. On the other hand, strategies have been developed to involve citizens in the design, creation and implementation of cultural events and products.
Based on a series of experiences, Le Buone Pratiche della Partecipazione aims to provide an opportunity for discussion and debate on the theme of participation in live performance, starting with the opportunities and problems that have emerged in recent years. As is customary with Le Buone Pratiche del Teatro, artists, operators and scholars will discuss the topic. We want to reflect on the impact of co-design and co-creation practices, in the awareness of the close relationship between cultural participation and democratic participation.

This event is part of PARTECIPAZIONE focus curated by ZONA K, Ateatro, and cheFare. Three moments of investigation, in-depth analysis, and exchange on participatory artistic practices, cultural policies, and grassroots movements as a possible antidote to the growing polarisation of society and the crisis of democratic institutions.
Starting with Joan Subirats’ lectio magistralis Democrazia nell’era dell’accellerazione. Nuovi spazi del “noi” followed by two days of meetings on the theme of participation. From Buone Pratiche a Teatro curated by Ateatro, as a reflection on the artistic, social and cultural impact of co-design and co-creation practices, to cheFare’s excursus on the objective and semantic complexity of Prendere Parte.
Oliviero Ponte di Pino has worked in publishing for over thirty years and has been the programme director of BookCity Milano since 2012. He founded the websites ateatro.it (in 2001) and trovafestival.it (in 2016, with Giulia Alonzo),and teaches on various courses and master’s programmes. Since 2004, he has co-edited Le Buone Pratiche del Teatro with Mimma Gallina. He presents the programme Piazza Verdi on Radio3 and has collaborated on video and film projects. His books include Dioniso e la nuvola. L’informazione e la critica teatrale in rete (with Giulia Alonzo, 2017) and Un Teatro per il XXI Secolo. Lo Spettacolo Dal Vivo Ai Tempi Del Digitale (2021), Cultura. A Heritage for Democracy (2023) and In Giro per Festival (with Giulia Alonzo, 2025).
Mimma Gallina has been involved in theatre organisation since the 1970s, curating and directing companies, theatres, festivals and international projects. She has also taught theatre organisation at the Paolo Grassi School, the University of Bologna and other universities and organisations for many years. Together with Oliviero Ponte di Pino, she has promoted Le Buone Pratiche del Teatro through the Ateatro Association since 2004. Her numerous publications include Organizzare Teatro and Riorganizzare Teatro, both published by FrancoAngeli.
