PROSPEKT PALESTINE PROJECT

For over two years, Gaza has been systematically excluded from international news coverage: its border remains closed foreign press, leaving local journalists as the sole witnesses. Since October 7th, 2023, over 240 Palestinians, including journalists, photographers and media workers, have been killed by the Israeli army, often in deliberately targeted attacks. The genocide in Gaza has become the deadliest conflict for journalists in contemporary history.

The exhibition by the Activestills collective, curated by Prospekt, is intended as a tribute to Palestinian photographers and a call for justice for all those who have been killed, attacked, arrested and dehumanised – and for those who, despite the risks and horrors, continue to document what is happening so that world can see and react.

► On 3 May at 7.00 pm, to mark the opening of the photography exhibition by the Activestills collective, there will be a talk about Palestine, photography, journalism and the exhibition. Founded in 2005, the Activestills photography collective has documented Palestinian popular resistance in the face of Israeli colonial violence. Starting out as a small group of activist photographers, the collective has grown to include Palestinians, Israelis and international photographers who are united in their rejection of the Zionist colonial project. Activestills regards its work as part of a broader struggle against all forms of oppression, racism, and violations of fundamental rights.

Launched in 2025 by a group of photographers from the Prospekt agency, the Prospekt Palestine Project aims to counter the distortion of public debate on the Palestinian issue, support local professionals, and raise international public awareness. This project of active solidarity combines journalistic production and independent dissemination with the establishment of permanent educational and research infrastructure.

Since joining Activestills in 2018, Mohammed Zaanoun has documented the genocide from the outset. He has been displaced several times, has had to dig through the rubble of his home to save his children and has witnessed the killing of colleagues. He has also faced direct threats to his life. After managing to leave Gaza with his family, two other photographers from Gaza joined Activestills: Yousef Zaanoun, Mohammed’s brother, and Doaa Albaz.

Hailing from Nablus, Ahmad Al-Bazz has travelled across the country, visiting dozens of towns that were subjected to ethnic cleansing. He aims to document what remains of the villages that were depopulated during the Nakba of 1948, and to reconstruct the events that led to it. This is intended as a starting point for discussions about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
