Time is cyclical and often perceived as a complex and ineffable force.
A Chinese proverb commonly used to describe the tension between power, and the people says: “Water can carry a boat, but it can also overturn it”. Reinterpreting this metaphor – water as a socio-political current – this immersive installation draws the audience into the hidden forces that shape history.
The audience takes place between two monumental projections that portray a dynamic interaction: an aircraft carrier and a tsunami.
One replaces the other through a “physical” transfer of images, creating a dialogue between the screens. On one of the screens, the Liaoning, the first operative Chinese aircraft carrier, emerges and advances, overwhelming the viewer with its sound wave. The camera, immersed in a void-like landscape, captures the passage of the aircraft carrier before it moves away. Suddenly, a tsunami crashes down, submerging the viewer in a state of chaos. In tandem with the video, the sound unfolds layered compositions of historical archives, political rhetoric and natural elements throughout the space. Like a palimpsest, the soundscape unfolds along a linear narrative structure, with layers of sound material accumulating over time. This entirely kinaesthetic configuration reflects the difficulty of grasping the multiplicity of perspectives within a hyperconnected society.
