How can the body manifest collective resistance when words are silenced? KMs of Resistance is a choreographed sound performance that explores the primordial act of breathing as a means of expressing resistance and inspiring collective action.

On stage, two performers present synchronised, choreographed rhythmic sequences using only their breath, their voices and their bodies. Focusing on breath as an essential sound material of resistance, the work creates a form of protest without songs or slogans. Breath becomes a symbolic reminder of what unites us at the most fundamental level: our need for air, our fragility, our interdependence and the urgency we feel when our survival is at stake.

The work is inspired by the Aïta, a Moroccan oral tradition historically used to convey messages and incite resistance during the French protectorate in Morocco. Reimagined in a contemporary context, it offers a subtle way to address today’s pressing challenges, especially in times when direct speech is censored.

Mehdi Dahkan (born in 1998 in Tangier) is a choreographer, dancer and director whose work questions socially constructed behaviours and ideologies in contemporary Maghreb. His creations use the body to explore themes such as resistance, identity and belonging. Mehdi began his artistic journey with breakdancing, parkour and other urban practices. As a performer, he has collaborated with various companies and choreographers in Morocco and Europe. In 2019, Mehdi founded Jil Z, a platform dedicated to choreographic research. His work focuses on the socio-political implications of movement, emphasising the role and potential of the body in questioning norms and expressing resistance. Rejecting Orientalist representations, he seeks to reclaim space for a pluralistic portrayal of the Maghreb.
